What is Dasha In Astrology- A Comprehensive Guide

Why is astrology always considered as a fascinating subject? The primary reason is that it captivates one's curiosity by offering insights into their past, present, and future. One key concept in astrology is Dasha. What is Dasha in astrology? This article will delve into everything one should know about Dasha, its types, the meaning of Dasha, and the factors that influence them.

Vedic astrology suggests that the concept of Dasha is dependent on the period or conditions of the planet's position and the movements of celestial bodies on different aspects of one's life. It is a system used to understand the cyclical nature of life and the impact of planetary influence that unfolds over time. There are various factors that contribute to the positive and negative influence of Dasha, and understanding them will help you provide guidance for navigating opportunities and challenges in life.

What is Dasha in Astrology?

The term 'Dasha' originated from Sanskrit, and it translates to circumstance, condition, or state. According to Vedic astrology, 'Dasha' means the period of the planet, signifying the planetary period association with 9 celestial bodies. This period of Dasha indicates the positive and negative influence of an individual's life based on their location, considering factors such as zodiac sign, home, conjunction, or aspects.

Let's look at it over an example,

An individual's life will receive a blooming life of abundance, happiness, wealth, prosperity, and riches when they have a favourable Shukra placement alongside Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Jupiter. However, when this placement is alongside natural malefic planets such as the Sun, Saturn, or Mars, then it is considered to exhibit adverse effects.

Hence, to mitigate potential challenges and identify the effects of positive and negative influences, one should determine one's Dasha as it has profound importance in an individual's life and has serious connections and consequences for their well-being.

Types of Dasha in Kundli

As narrated by the Maharishi Parashara, there are 42 Dasha systems. There are more Dasha systems in Vedic astrology, but the Vimshoittari Dasha is commonly used today.  It operates for a 120-year lifespan and includes mahadasha of 9 major planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu.

How does it work?

The entire 120-year cycle is divided into 9 parts, and each planet has a certain number of years that run from 6 years to 20 years. The average lifespan of a human was considered to be 120 years, hence it allowed an individual to experience all mahadashas during their lifespan. However, today the average life expectancy is reduced around 70-80 years, hence, its impossible for an individual to experience all the mahadashas in their lifetime.

In order to address this effect, Vedic astrology future subdivided the Dasha into below,

  1. Antardasha
  2. Pratyantar Dasha
  3. Sookshma Dasha
  4. Praana Dasha
  5. Deha Dasha

This hierarchy allows for intricate analysis of an individual’s life events and provides in-depth insights into the specific time periods and their influence on different aspects of one’s life.

Let’s now look into the Mahadasha of all the planets in detail.

Mahadasha of Sun

Spanning a duration of 6 years, Sun or Surya Mahadasha is considered a significant period in one's life. For instance, the individual is likely to experience wealth, balance, and prosperity when the Sun is well-positioned or placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house of Kendra or the 11th house. This is considered the favourable placement that could be the time for your promotions, attaining authority or power, acquiring vehicles, and benefitting from government-related opportunities.

Could the Sun turn weak or unfavourable? Yes, if the Sun is weak or afflicted, the native may face challenges such as lack of wealth, balance, and property, loss of reputation, and lack of confidence. In addition to this, the relations with one of the parents may become strained during his period. To mitigate these negative effects, one can perform rituals such as Surya Dosh Nivaran puja.

Mahadasha of Moon

Spanning a duration of 10 years, Moon or Chandra Mahadasha is associated with emotional well-being and feminine energy. The key benefits of Chandra Dasha are female-related and can bring wealth, prosperity, and blessings from divine feminine energy. Other material possessions include the acquisition of vehicles. During this period, an individual can also experience a flourishing relationship with the maternal family and can experience mental peace.

What happens when a Moon Dasha is afflicted? It can lead to depression, strained relationships with maternal family, mental fatigue, depression, and loss of wealth and property. The placement of Moon with Rahu can further worsen challenges. To minimise the adverse impact, one can chant the Chandra mantra, offer milk to Lord Shiva, or wear a pearl silver ring.

Mahadasha of Mars

Mars or Mangal Dhasa is associated with determination, energy, and courage. A well-positioned Mars can influence positive results such as land assets, high positions, acquisition of jewellery, and improved relationships.

An afflicted or weak Mangal Dhasa can lead to physical injuries, accidents, ego clashes, blood-related diseases, or conflicts with one's spouse. The effects can vary based on the alignment associated with the ascendant sign. To minimise adverse effects, wear Trimukhi Rudraksha on the neck or a red coral gemstone.

Mahadasha of Mercury

Spanning for 17 years, Mercury or Budha Dasha is associated with intellect, commerce, and communication. In a favourable position, the native is likely to experience wealth in business and education honours in communication-related activities and sports.

A weak Mercury Desha can lead to restlessness, loss of wealth, mental illness, skin problems, and diseases related to the urinary tract. To counteract the adverse effects, practices such as donating green clothes to relatives and feeding green vegetables to cows can be beneficial.

Mahadasha of Jupiter

Jupiter or Guru Dasha is associated with wisdom, spirituality, and knowledge; it lasts for 16 years. The planet is named Guru, as it is the largest planet among the celestial bodies.

During the favourable period, one may be inclined towards spiritual pursuits and will find opportunities to become a philosopher, professor, teacher, judge, or yogi. Whereas an afflicted Guru Dasha can bring defamation and mental fatigue. To minimise impact, one can pray to Lord Brihaspati, offer service to saints, or observe fasting on Thursdays.

Mahadasha of Venus

Spanning for 20 years, Venus or Shukra Dasha is associated with artistic pursuits, love, and beauty. It is said that a well-positioned Shukra Dasha, especially one in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th of Kedra, is considered favourable for marriage and can bring wealth from the entertainment industry, marriage, or cosmetics.

A weak Venus positioning can result in excessive spending, immoral activities, issues in professional status, and many more. To mitigate adverse effects, wear silver jewellery or carry silver coins in your purse.

Mahadasha of Saturn

Saturn or Shani Dasha is associated with perseverance, hard work, and discipline; it lasts for 19 years. A well-positioned Saturn can bring wealth from businesses such as iron, coal, mines, oil or agriculture. Whereas, a weak Saturn position can negatively impact, leading individuals, towards immoral activities and criminal tendencies. This may also bring mental stress or loss of property. To minimise impact, pray Shiva lingam by pouring cow's milk mixed with sesame seeds.

Mahadasha of Rahu

Rahu Dasha is considered a significant influence in one's life, and it lasts for 18 years. A well-positioned Rahu, especially in the 11th, 10th, or 3rd house, can make it favourable for the native with experiences such as success, recognition, and wealth. In contrast, a weak Rahu can cause mental stress, business failure, or loss of wealth. To mitigate the effect, one can donate urad dal and sesame seeds.

Mahadasha of Ketu

Ketu Dasha lasts for 7 years and is relatively shorter. A well-positioned Ketu, especially in the 11th house, blesses individuals with heightened intuition and psychic abilities, emphasizing the subconscious. In contrast, a weak Ketu can cause the development of vicious tendencies and lead to misery. To mitigate the adverse effect, one can worship Lord Ganesha or light lamps with ghee.

Factors Influencing Dasha's Quality

Each Dasha has its own advantages and disadvantages; hence, it's challenging to predict the favourable and unfavourable characteristics of each Dasha. The quality of each Dasha depends on the nature and strength associated with the planet. However, there are some ideal natural possessions of some planets, for example, Jupiter or Venus are associated with bringing positive impacts. Meanwhile, malefic planets such as Rahu, Ketu, and Saturn may have adverse effects.

What are the factors that can significantly alter the quality of Dasha? They are planet movements and house placements, i.e.,

  • Favourable planetary positions tend to bring auspicious circumstances.
  • Unfavourable planetary positions may bring challenges and obstacles.

Another factor that can influence the overall quality of Dasha is the individual's birth chart. That means a harmonious and balanced birth chart will have positive influences during Dasha period and chart marked by challenging planetary placement could heightened struggles and difficulties during certain Dasha periods.

All you need to understand is that each Dasha has its own set of characteristics that are shaped by various astrological factors. As stated above, favourable Dashas present you with learning, growth, and personal transformation. So, it is recommended to seek guidance from experienced astrologers if you wish to maximise positive influences and monitor adverse effects.

Vimshottari Mahadasha System in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology, the Vimshottari Mahadasha in the current decade is collectively used to calculate and interpret the Dasha periods. The duration for each planet varies significantly.

Find here the breakdown of Mahadasha durations for each planet:

Mahadsha duration (in years) for each planet
Planets Vedic Astrology Duration (in years)
Sun Surya 6
Moon Chandra 10
Mars Mangal 7
Jupiter Guru 16
Saturn Shani 19
Mercury Budha 17
Venus Shukra 20
Rahu - 18
Ketu - 7

Did you know Vimshotatri Dahsa follows a 120-year cycle? Hence, in a human lifespan, it's impossible for an individual to experience the Mahadasha of all the 9 celestial bodies in a single time. The first Dasha duration decreases based on the Moon's position in the lunar constellation, Nakshatra, at the time of the individual's birth.

Dasha's interpretation is multifaceted and it is recommended to look into the insight with willingness to learn and an open mind. Each type of Dasha discussed above carries a unique set of experiences that will shape your personal growth story. It is also crucial to remember that Dasha's quality is determined by the planet and factors that influence them within the birth chart of an individual.

Additionally, adopting practices such as divine invocations, gemstone remedies, and spiritual practices can adversely impact the challenging Dashas and positive influences of favourable periods. Aligning the actions with the cosmic rhythms can help create a life of fulfilment, balance, and prosperity.
