Introduction
The purpose of human life is to liberate themselves from cycle of reincarnation. On Physical plane human beings are composed of Panchabootas. On Psychological plane they are composed of Trigunas. The proportion in which they exist in our psyche triggers the Shadripus or six enemies of the mind. These are Kama (lust), Krodha (anger), Lobha (greed), Mada (arrogance), Moha (delusion) and Matsarya (jealousy). These six enemies of mind are hinderances in the soul’s liberation.
Bhagavadgita Verse 14.5 explains how the human birth is composed of the three humors Sattva, Rajas, Tamas.
सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणा: प्रकृतिसम्भवा: |
निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् || 5||
O Arjuna! Born of Prakriti, the three Gunas, Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas bind the imperishable Jivatma in the body.
Further Lord Srikrishna explains in Verse 3-37 says, the Trigunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) are the catalyst which trigger the Arishadvargas in human beings.
श्रीभगवानुवाच |
काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भव: ||
महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम् || 37||
“The Blessed Lord said: It is desire, it is anger, born of Rajoguna (the impulse of action), all-consuming and all-evil. Know this as the enemy here”.
Bhagavadgita Chapter 16 Verse 21 explains the way in which the Kama, Krodha and Lobha succumbs to birth- rebirth cycle.
त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मन: |
काम: क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत् || 21||
“Kama, Krodha and Lobha form the triple opening into Hell. They are the three evils (Dushtatrayam) which directly lead man into the lower worlds. When these gates are shut by dispassion, love and detachment, there is no fear for man”.
Trigunas in Jyotishya
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Sloka13-15 explains the three Gunas,
“The three powers are Śrī Shakti (Mother Lakshmi) with Sattva-Gun, Bhū Shakti (Mother-Earth) with Rajo-Gun and Nīla Shakti with Tamo-Gun”.
The Sloka 22 explains the Nature of Planets,
“Sattvic Planets are the luminaries (Sun & Moon) and Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are Rajasik, while Mars and Saturn are Tamasik”.
Shadripus & Planets
In Jyotish, 9th house is referred as luck, fortune and dharma (righteousness), 9th from 9th house 5th house represents Purva Punya reveals if we deserve good fortune in this life based past life deeds. The result of good or bad deeds are delivered in 6th house, that why 6th house is called a house of debts or enemies (external & internal). The Graha in 6th House in Navamsa Chart represent the shadripu which will impact in their life.
The internal enemies are represented by six vices or Shadripus. The Ripu associated with planets in the 6th bhava or dispositor will be dominant internal enemy in the native.
The above table depicts the ruling planets of each of these vices/ ripus, The ripu associated with planets or dispositor of 6th house will be an obstructions in day to day activities since 6th house represents daily life.
The Lords of Rasis where the significator of Shadripus exalts, reflects the positive attributes of the transformation as depicted in the above table.
The Upachaya houses 3rd ,6th and 11th are mutually connected with 6th house of Shadripus and 8th house of transformation. These houses are where Individuals can execute Free-will to overcome “Shadripus” in them to “Satparivartana” by acquiring positive attributes of 3rd House (Communication and mental stability), 6th House (righteous work and self-less service) and 11th House (Gains, desires and accomplishments by righteous means).
Conclusion
The motto of human life is to endeavour constant transformation to evolve ourselves to a spiritual being and liberate(moksha). Through Jyotish we can identify the inner enemies (ripus) which are dominant in our psyche and overcome them with profound positive thoughts and actions.
The revered sage Adi Shankara has given a message to the humanity about the consequences of pondering on the Arishadvargas in Sloka 26 of Bhaja Govindam
कामं क्रोधं लोभं मोहं, त्यक्त्वाऽत्मानं भावय कोऽहम्।
आत्मज्ञान विहीना मूढाः, ते पच्यन्ते नरकनिगूढाः ॥
“Give up lust, anger, infatuation, and greed. Ponder over your real nature. Fools are they who are blind to the Self. Cast into hell they suffer there endlessly”.
